Leopard attack – Forest department agrees to compensate the family

The forest department will compensate the family which is to the tune of Rs 8 lakhs on Monday.

Three cages have been put up at Kute vasti near Saikheda after a leopard killed a four year old boy named Sarthak Mahesh Solse on Friday, September 23, 2016.

Before any help could reach the leopard ran away with the child. He was declared dead at the hospital.

The forest officials who were on the spot, included B R Dhakre, range forest officer, A P Kale, forester, T d Bhoye forester. Their team conducted a survey of the area in the morning on Saturday. "As it was raining on Friday night, we could not do anything except putting up a cage with a prey as bait", stated A P Kale.

"There are already 8 cages placed to trap leopards in Niphad tehsil which falls under the Yeola forest range office", stated B R Dhakre, range forest officer.

Villagers have demanded more cages to be put to trap the animal. "We can understand their sentiment and fear, particularly, when life of a child is lost. But according to the law, the animal also needs to be protected", Kale adds.

The forest department will compensate the family which is to the tune of Rs 8 lakhs on Monday.

Inspite of campaigning to create awareness to protect against the animal attack, the fact remains that the population of the leopards in this region is increasing.
