A female leopard and one of her cubs were trapped when they were mourning the loss of another family member, which had fallen into a well at Shivre village in the Sinnar tehsil of Nashik district.
On Saturday, Malhari Wagh, a farmer in Shivre, spotted a leopard with her cub in his field. Though they fled the scene upon seeing him, Malhari found that they had left behind another cub in a well.
Though forest officials rescued the cub, it was found dead.
The leopard sighting caused panic among the villagers who demanded that the leopard and her cubs be caught. Following this, a trap was laid on Sunday and another cub was also trapped.
A desperate mother who had already lost a cub and had seen others being trapped, could not stay away and got herself trapped in the other cage laid out in the farm. However, it was seen that she had managed to tear the iron cage from the bottom.
“It has been difficult to transfer her cage in such a situation and so we decided to anaesthetize her. A dart was blown for the same and then shifted to Nehru botanical garden in Nashik,” said Sunil Wadekar, forest range officer and expert on leopard dart blowing.
The female leopard is about four-and-a-half years old. The cubs are about two months old.
