A college professor was today arrested on charges of molesting and intimidating a female student, police said. Ankit Agarwal (27), lecturer in a college based in suburban Goregaon, was arrested on Thursday after the victim, who is a first year Commerce student, filed a complaint with police yesterday, police said.

"The accused was arrested today and produced before a court that granted him bail," said senior inspector Sunil Wadke, Goregaon police station. According to the police, the 19-year-old victim in her complaint claimed Agarwal was troubling her since October.

"Agarwal started liking her and made advances, but the girl did not respond. He warned her of rejecting her assignments and failing her in the exams if she refused his love," said another officer.

Police claimed the girl had through her friends brought the matter to the notice of the college authorities, but in vain.

"The victim approached us yesterday. We took note of the complaint and registered an FIR against the lecturer under IPC sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC," Wadke added.

After arresting Agarwal, the police visited the college and enquired with other students if he misbehaved with them too. Further probe into the matter is on.
