Seeking to break the ice after his unceremonious exit at Shiv Sena’s Dusshera rally where he was booed off the stage for his comments about the party president, senior leader Manohar Joshi met Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday to exchange ‘Diwali greetings’.

However, Joshi was unable to discuss the contentious issue with Thackeray. The former Lok Sabha speaker, who went incommunicado for four days after the public humiliation, had struck a defiant pose claiming that he had not said anything wrong and hence would not apologise.

The October 13 Shivaji Park episode had led to rumours that Joshi might contest for the Rajya Sabha with the support of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

On Sunday, Joshi met Uddhav at the latter’s Bandra residence to exchange Diwali greetings. “We discussed absolutely nothing (on any contentious issue). There was a huge crowd waiting to meet him. I greeted him; he wished me back and we decided to meet again,” Joshi told dna.

“We will speak on issues that will come up,” said Joshi, when asked about whether he would put forth his side of the story when they meet again. “Different questions related to the party will be discussed,” he added.

Joshi, the party’s first MLC, is said to be eager to enter the portals of either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha. However, his rivals within the party claim he lacks individual elective merit.

Meanwhile, Dalit leader and former Lok Sabha MP Ramdas Athavale, who heads the Republican Party of India (Athavale), also met Thackeray on Sunday. Incidentally, Athavale, who has entered into a rainbow coalition with the Shiv Sena and the BJP before last year’s civic polls, is himself angling for a Rajya Sabha seat.
