Vijay dashami is when we celebrate the victory of good over evil, and more importantly, of knowledge over ignorance. It is the day when kids are initiated into the world of learning; not only into the world of alphabets and books but also into learning a new skill like dance and music, or any new musical instrument.
In line with that, many classes see a lot of new students enrolling on this day, as it is considered to be an auspicious start to their learning. Gayatri Subramanian, director of Takshashila dance academy in Vashi said, “Vidyarambham encompasses acquiring any knowledge including fine arts. Thus many small kids - those aged between 6-10 years - enroll to learn any form of dance.
Also, in the a trend that is on since the last few years, quite a few married and working women join on this day.”
She added that for old students, it is a day to pay respects to their guru; for the skill they imparted to them. “All my current students will give a performance on this day, after which I teach them a new piece.”
Kalasadan, a bharatnatyam and carnatic vocal class that has its branches in Vashi, Nerul and Kharghar, already has had many enquires from prospective students. Iyer Narayanswamy, carnatic music teacher in the Nerul branch said, “For both dance and music, we have about 20 students each, wanting to enroll. They are all freshers, but not all are young. We have had enquiries from adults also. However, most of the new students come on vijaya dashami only, and are accepted in our new batches.”
Pointing out one of the notable mythological significances as to why people prefer to start learning a new skill, Narayanswamy said, “Arjuna got his bow and arrow on this day, and he started to learn archery. His dexterity is unparalleled and thus people believe that they will be successful in what they learn if they start on this day.”
Pavitra Swaminathan, a resident of Airoli said that she will start learning violin this year, and will enroll on Monday. “Violin is an instrument that compliments music very well. My brother will also start his casio classes from this day.”
