As soon as HSC students of the Commerce stream reached their examination centres at 10.30am on Monday, word got out that the question paper – book-keeping and accountancy – was circulating on a networking application. While the state board has denied the leak, the Mumbai divisional board on Tuesday submitted a letter to file a case regarding the same.

Word about the paper leaking on WhatsApp spread like wildfire, but authorities at the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) said that it was just that – a rumour; technically, the screenshots of the paper began doing the rounds on WhatsApp at 11.03am – three minutes after the exam began, and 33 minutes after students entered the exam halls.

Nonetheless, they have decided to nab the culprit who spread the images. When contacted, SY Chandekar, secretary of Mumbai divisional board said that the board on Tuesday received permission from the Pune board to file a police complaint.

He added: "We have submitted a letter each to the Vashi police and the cyber crime branch of Belapur. After they investigate and nail the culprit, an FIR will be lodged by them."
