A beat marshal attached to Vakola police was allegedly manhandled by a lawyer in Santacruz East. The incident took place at Golibar Road number 3 on Wednesday afternoon when constable Uttam Sangle (28) was at the spot to stop a tiff between two parties.

According to the police, the accused, Arun Chaubey (27), who lives in a building on the road, approached Vakola police around 2pm complaining about a fight between two parties in his building.

A police officer said: "We sent constable Bharat Vasave to the spot. When he reached there, the fight was on. Chaubey asked Vasave to summon another constable also as the fight was getting out of hand."

Following this, Vasave called Sangle. According to the police, when Vasave was explaining the situation on phone to Sangle, Chaubey took the phone from him and asked Sangle to proceed to the spot immediately. Sangle replied that he would take a while as he was on patrol duty.

"Chaubey then started shouting at the constable and questioned his efficiency," said the officer.

When Sangle reached the spot, he questioned Chaubey about his misbehaviour. The two had a verbal duel, following which Chaubey allegedly slapped Sangle and manhandled him.

Chaubey has been arrested under IPC sections 332 (causing hurt to deter public servant from duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging duty).

According to the police, Sangle sustained minor injuries and is now back on duty.
