An Andheri resident who runs a laundry allegedly raped a 10-year-old girl on Monday while she was returning home from school. The suspect, Ramesh Maiku Kanojiya (50), lives in Ganesh Nagar, N Dutta Road, Andheri (west).

According to the police, the victim lives in the same locality and the incident occurred around 3pm when she was on her way home from school. The suspect called her to his shop saying he wanted to talk to her. Once she entered the shop, he pulled down the shutter.
"He then allegedly raped her. After that he asked her to leave the place and threatened her not to disclose the matter to anyone," a police officer said.

"The victim was crying when she came out of the shop: soon neighbours gathered and asked her what had happened and she narrated the incident. People then dragged Kanojiya out of the shop and thrashed him," the officer said.
The suspect was then handed over to the DN Nagar police.

"Following the complaint registered by the victim's parents, we arrested Kanojiya on the charge of rape," the officer added.
