A 32-year-old housewife from Kandivli lodged a case against a Latur-based politician in Charkop police station on Saturday, saying that he raped her on the pretext of marriage.

A senior police inspector, Anant Koli, said, “Around two years ago, the suspect Sunil Gaikwad, met the woman on a social networking site. After several online conversations, Gaikwad came to Mumbai and met her.” The victim, 32, is married and lives in Charkop in Kandivli (west) along with her husband.

“After a few meetings with the victim, Gaikwad proposed to her and she accepted his proposal. Victim alleged that in the last one-and-half-year, Gaikwad and she were physically involved, whenever he came to Mumbai,” said Koli.

“In between, whenever the victim raised the question of marriage, he used to come up with some excuse to avoid the topic and continued to rape her. He mostly came to Mumbai, when the victim’s husband was out of town,” said Koli.

“The victim also alleged that Gaikwad made an obscene video of her and had also sent her obscene text messages and posted nude photographs of her on a social networking site,” added Koli.

“The victim suspected foul play when Gaikwad started ignoring her and stopped taking her calls. She then approached the police and lodged a complaint,” said an officer. “Following on the victim’s complaint, we have booked Gaikwad on charges of rape and insulting a woman’s modesty under the Indian Penal Code and also under the relevant section of IT Act,” added the officer.

“We are verifying the facts alleged by the victim, so no arrest has been made so far the case. After the investigation, the action will be taken against him,” added Koli.
