The Railways will be running extra local trains late at night until September 24 — the last night of the Ganapati festival. While the Central Railways will operate special trains starting September 18-19 for five nights, the Western Railway will operate additional trains on the intersecting night of September 23-24.

The CR started the first such special train on Monday night. All these trains will depart Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 1.30 am and reach Kalyan at 3 am. "These special midnight trains will be operated for five days to deal with the rush of commuters due to the festivities," said Sunil Udasi, Chief PRO, Central Railway.

However, as of now, no provision has been made for the 10 lakh odd Harbour line commuters, who also come all the way to south and central Mumbai to visit Ganesh pandals. Most of these are in Currey Road, Chinchpokli, Lalbaug, Parel, Matunga, Girgaum, and Charni Road.

The WR authorities will operate eight special local train services on the night of September 23-24. "To ease out commute on the final day of Ganpati immersion, we will run four pairs of special train services between Churchgate and Virar," said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief PRO, Western Railway.

The first special train will depart from Churchgate at 1.15am and reach Virar at 2.50am, the second will depart from Churchgate at 1.55 am and reach Virar at 3.32 am, and the third one will depart at 2.25 am and reach at 4.02 am. The last local will depart from Churchgate at 3.20 am and reach Virar at 4.58 am.

From Virar, the first special will depart at 12.15 am and reach Churchgate at 1.52 am; Second one will depart from Virar at 12.45 am and reach Curchgate at 2.22 am, while the third one will depart at 1.40 am and reach at 3.15 am. The last train will depart from Virar at 3 am and reach Churchgate at 4.40 am.

Also, the WR will not halt Churchgate-bound fast trains at Charni Road on September 23, due to Ganpati immersion. The trains would not halt between 5.30 pm and 8.30 pm. Slow line trains going towards Churchgate will not halt at Charni Road Station between 5 pm and 10 pm.
