With a satisfactory trend of monsoon in the catchment, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday revoked the 20% water cut which it had imposed on Mumbai since August last year.

The civic body might be forced to re-impose the water cut once again if the lakes do not get the required quantity for supply. Normally, the water department considers the situation on October 1 each year whether the stock can last till July 31 next year, that is, 376 days. However, presently, the lakes have just 167 days of water stock.

Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, additional municipal commissioner, made a statement in the civic standing committee stating that the seven lakes supplying water to the city have received good rainfall this year. On Tuesday morning, Tulsi lake, which supplies water to Mumbai, had overflowed. Mukherjee said that lakes have 64% more water as on date in comparison to the average of the past 10 years.

Ironically, on Tuesday, additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh, while giving out monsoon details, said that the civic administration cannot lift water cuts as it is too early and since only 55% water stock has been collected. But just a day after, Mukherjee, who heads the water department, announced the decision to withdraw the water cut. Mumbai requires 14.37 lakh million litres of water till October 1.

On Wednesday, the total water content in the seven lakes stood at 7.93 lakh million litres, while last year on the same day it was 2.66 lakh million litres.

Water cut was imposed in August 2015 following a weak monsoon last year. BMC imposed 20% water cut since the midnight of August 26.

The BMC supplied 3,750 million litres of water to Mumbai approximately prior to the water cut. However, with water cut being imposed, only 3,200 million litres of water is supplied. The city faced water cut in two ways — one in the form of water pressure and supply and other in timings.

Apart from the 20% water cut for residents, a 50% water cut had also been implemented by the BMC for commercial consumers like malls, star hotels, factories, stadiums.
