After a week, ladies compartments in two local trains on Western Railway will be equipped with closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

At the moment, the project is being implemented on a pilot basis, with installation underway in the two rakes. Geared with these cameras, it will be easier for security agencies to catch hold of criminals who get into ladies compartments at night or early morning hours to either rob them or attack them sexually.

"We are working on the project to fix CCTVs in trains. These will only be in ladies coaches as announced earlier," said Sharat Chandrayan, chief PRO, Western Railway.

Although a date has not been finalised to introduce rakes with CCTV cameras, it is likely to happen only after a week. Every ladies coach will have four to five CCTV cameras. There are three ladies compartments in each rake.
Depending on the response from commuters, at a later stage, around six rakes will be equipped with CCTV cameras.

The video footage will be live-streamed at a central location via 3G Internet. The video data will be preserved for a month.

In the past there have been multiple cases of women commuters being attacked or robbed or molested in a running train. This prompted authorities to come up with the plan to install cameras in trains that can also withstand train vibrations.

Mumbai Monorail and Mumbai Metro rakes already have CCTV cameras inside every coach. Even every BEST bus is equipped with two cameras, but a majority of them are out of order.
