Three years after the state launched 'Blood On Call' service, the blood storage bank centres are yet to appoint staff members according to the RTI reply received by a city-based RTI activist.

The State Blood Transfusion Committee's (SBTC) blood delivery service is also known as Jeevan Amrut Seva promised to deliver blood to patients anywhere in the city immediately.

While Sir JJ Mahanagar Raktapedhi is a primary blood bank in the city, nine other blood storage centres are supposed to be set up to provide immediate blood supply in a 50-km radius. SBTC has failed to set up the blood storage centres in the city as majority of them either haven't received approval from FDA or are yet to appoint the staff.

As per the sources, earlier blood storage centres lacked machinery equipment and instruments while now they have instruments but inadequate staff members.

Storage centres which are suppose to be functional 24x7 are located in Vasai Municipal Corporation, Bombay Port Trust Hospital at Wadala, Bhabha Hospital at Kurla, ESIS Hospital at Mulund, VN Desai Hospital at Santacruz, BMC Hospital at Malwani, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital at Byculla and Shatabdi Hospital at Kandivli.

According to the RTI reply, Kurla-based Bhabha Hospital, VN Desai Hospital, Ambedkar Hospital, ESIS Hospital have all instruments and machinery facilities but are yet to appoint junior technicians and other staff members.

The RTI activist said, "For Bhabha Hospital storage centre, FDA is yet to approve the plan. It has been almost three years, but yet the plan is not sent to FDA while the instruments are just lying. Similar is the case with VN Desai Hospital, Santacruz. The post of junior technicians are to be assigned. They have not submitted the proposal to FDA."

While the in-charge of the blood bank storage centre at Bhabha Hospital and VN Desai Hospital were not available for comment, doctor in-charge of Shatabdi Hospital did not wish to comment. FDA has approved the plan of Shatabdi Hospital but technicians are yet to join.
