Even as the Mumbai police grapple with grainy CCTV images in their hunt for the killers of 23-year old techie Esther Anuhya, who went missing from Kurla Terminus, the ground reality is that the advanced security umbrella planned for the terminus is a long way away.

As part of the Rs27 crore Integrated Security System (ISS) on Central Railway, there are plans to have under-vehicle scanners that can store details of the vehicles that enter the terminus and also an array of CCTV cameras that can recognise number plates and store them for retrieval later in case of untoward incidents.

These cameras have been the backbone of the famed London congestion charge scheme for years. Most importantly, officials said, these CCTVs would be high-resolution ones that don’t pixelate when images are zoomed into.

The ISS is an integration of the CCTV surveillance system, access control systems (under-vehicle scanners), X-ray baggage scanners, door-frame metal detectors & handheld metal detectors and explosive detection and disposal systems into one seamless grid. Eight Central Railway (CR) stations: CST, Dadar, Kurla, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Thane, Kalyan, Pune and Miraj will be provided with this security umbrella.

According to senior CR officials, the project is still incomplete at CST, though it was supposed to be completed in the middle of last year with the most important function — the command and control software — still to be decided upon. It is this software that will be the backbone of the ISS. LTT’s turn would come only after the ISS is implemented in CST and Thane.

When contacted, Mukesh Nigam, divisional railway manager, CR, said that all efforts are being made to speed up the project. “It is very important as far as security of passengers and railway premises is concerned. We are trying to speed it up,” Nigam said.
