The construction of the CST-Panvel elevated corridor, the DN Nagar-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro-2B corridor as well as an elevated 3-track Harbour station over Kurla is going to be a challenge for engineers as well as commuters at the heavily-patronised station.

Work on these lines would be above the 22 metre height band- equivalent to a 7-storeyed building- and work on all three projects will go on simultaneously over the next few years, said officials.

The Rs 10,986 crore Metro 2B corridor will be at a height of around 6.25 metre above the tracks at Kurla — parallel to the Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) bridge that runs over the tracks in the north-end of Kurla — and gradually rise to a height of about 22 metre above the Halav Bridge on LBS Road near the station.

Speaking to DNA, Pravin Darade said that like all engineering works in the city, it would be a challenge. "But we can do it, no doubt about it," he said.

The earlier avatar of the Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd metro corridor failed to take off for several reasons, one of which was the construction of a metro station at a height band of 22 metre above the Kurla tracks. This time, however, the tracks will be passed at a lower height — 6.25 metre — which makes the construction less problematic.

At the same time, Central Railway has already started work on constructing an elevated three-line Harbour station at Kurla. As per CR plans, the Rs 96 crore project comprises creation of a rail flyover starting from the north of Chunabhatti to the south of Tilaknagar stations above the current platforms 7 and 8.

The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) will also be starting work on the elevated CST-Panvel corridor by next year if it goes according to plan. This corridor will be at a height above the metro line, said officials.
