Kurla resident serves free food during Ramzan

Come sundown, the aroma of the choicest delicacies is in the air in a number of areas across the city having Muslims observing Ramzan, who get together for iftaar, the SG Barve street in Kurla is special. The reason: 32-year-old Mansoor Shaikh, who owns a restaurant in the area, has been distributing iftaar food free of cost by putting the items on tables outside his eatery.

Shaikh has been doing this for the last five years.

Talking about the initiative, he said, "The majority population in the area is Muslim. And because the area connects the central and western lines, many commuters travel long distance via Kurla. The initiative was started to help these long-distance travellers and the working class who pass this area."

"After sunset, many don't any option and start searching for a place to break their fast. This initiative has helped several grab a bite for their commute till they get a proper meal at home," he added.

After 7pm, people start gathering to eat the variety of chicken dishes, fruits, fast food and soups. Dozens of fruits, over 5kg pakodas and chicken dishes are made every day before the sunset.

"So far, we have got a good response from the pedestrians and commuters. Over 150 people come to eat the iftaar meal everyday. All are invited without any discrimination. Earlier, we had set up five tables outside, but now we have around seven," said Shaikh.
