"He wanted to become an engineer, but with the Std X results the dream has crashed," said Bharti, mother of Abhijeet Bhansode, who allegedly hanged himself at his Kurla residence on Monday night a few hours after the results were declared.

Residence of the 15-year-old, who scored 44%, at Patra Chawl in Sable Nagar area was teeming with friends, relatives and all those who knew the family, but despite the number of people, it was silent and gloomy.

Friends of the SKP school student said he was serious about his studies and career and wanted to go for science to become an IT engineer. "Abhijeet used to study all night for the exams and had scored good in the prelims," said a friend.

Abhijeet used to stay with his grandparents, parents, brothers Abhay and Abhishek, uncle and the latter's daughter. Abhijeet's father Anand did small tasks, such as decoration in functions, while his mother used to work in a garment shop.

"Because the family was poor, Abhijeet studied on his own. He was quite confident about securing good marks," another friend said.

"We were on a visit to our native village in Karad for the summer holidays, except Abhijeet's mother, who had stayed back with him for the results. After the results were declared Abhijeet called up his father to inform him about it around 5pm. He sounded good and we did not suspect that anything wrong could be going on in his mind. At 10pm, we were informed by the neighbors that Abhijeet was found hanging. He was taken to Rajawadi hospital, where he was pronounced dead," said his uncle Surendra Kamble (30).

Another friend of Abhijeet said, "We are 10 friends who studied in the same school and reside in the same locality. Abhijeet was weak in English and maths and, hence, had decided to work harder in them to score good. After the results, we all were celebrating, but he seemed dissatisfied. He voiced his worry about getting admission in a good college thrice, but we motivated him. It is hard to believe that one of our close mates took such a drastic step only because of disappointment."

"I had congratulated him for passing and achieving the marks on his own by working hard. I was proud of him and we had never pressurised him. We had also stopped giving our top floor room on rent, so that he could use it and study without disturbance," Bharti said.

Senior inspector of Nehru Nagar police station Pramod Khorpade said, "After post-mortem, Abhijeet's body was handed over to his family for the last rites. We did not find any suicide note and have recorded statements of his parents. Preliminary probe revealed he was not happy with his result."
