Family of Kulbhushan Jadhav and those known to him said they never knew that Jadhav has left Indian Navy and had started his own business. A month ago, Jadhav's father — a retired ACP from Mumbai police — had told one of his acquaintance that Kulbhushan was upset about his father working with a private firm even after retirement. He had told his father that he earns well and had also got a good increment and that his father need not to work any more.

Jadhav — who took premature retirement from the Indian Navy — reportedly engaged in a legitimate business of operating ferries from the Iranian port town of Bandar Abbas and was recently caught by the Pakistani authorities from Balochistan on charges of spying. The Pakistani authorities have reportedly found a passport from Jadhav which have his name as Hussein Mubarak Patel and a valid Iranian visa.

"I am shocked that Kulbhushan has been touted as a RAW spy by Pakistan authorities. I am sure that he has nothing to do with the intelligence agency. Kulbhushan was very good in studies and was an NDA pass out. I was not aware that he had quit his job with the navy. He is married and has two children. His schooling was done in Mumbai," said a close relative of Kulbhushan. He added, that the photograph that had appeared in the media is not very clear. Hence, he cannot say for sure whether it is him.

Another person, who has been close to the Jadhavs since past many years said that Kulbhushan's presence in Pakistan and arrest is very shocking. "I had spoken to his father (Sudhir) a month ago. He told me that he is very happy with his son and he had told him to leave his post retirement private job. During my conversation with Sudhir, he never mentioned that his son has quit the navy and is doing some business. Probably he himself must not be aware of it," the acquaintance said. Despite repeated attempts retired ACP Sudhir Jadhav could not be contacted.
