Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL), which runs trains on one of the country’s toughest albeit beautiful terrains, is imparting courses in disaster management to its employees.

KRCL officials believe that the five-day training, which started on Thursday, would help the employees tackle situations like floods, earthquakes, fires etc. “We are training our employees so that in case of any emergency, our employees could be of some help,” explained Vaishali Patange, chief spokesperson of KRCL.

The training is important for the railway itself since the company’s single-line route runs through the Konkan Ghat section of the state, with the rail line having been built cutting cliffs and mountains. The route has tunnels and some imposing bridges, which becomes the line’s problems once monsoon sets in. According to officials, the line gets disrupted by landslides almost every year, and it is during such times, disaster management comes in.

“There is nothing better than having a personnel, trained to help people when they are caught in problems like a landslide,” said the official.
