Most vacationers in the satellite city are choosing Konkan over Goa this year, to ring in the New Year.

The recently concluded Global Kokan Festival, which showcased exotic locations of the region and its virgin beaches, seems to have had its impact. The region has emerged as a preferred destination over Goa during the winter break, and most vacationers are choosing Konkan ring in the New Year.

“We were planning to visit Goa during the winter break but found the hotel rates during the December 25-January 1 period quite exorbitant. There is a quantum jump in the rates as compared to the off period,” said Aseem Kumar, a resident of Kharghar.  He added, “We visited the Global Kokan Festival recently and came back impressed with the beauty of the locations on showcase. Finally, we decided to visit Malvan, Tarkarli, Amboli, and plan to be at Ganpatipule during the New Year.”

Kumar said, “At Ganpatipule we have booked a home lodging facility which is extremely cheap and includes breakfast and lunch as well. Hotels rates in Konkan are cheaper than Goa.”

Kumar’s sentiments are echoed by Belapur resident, SM Sharma, who says, “The Global Kokan Festival acted as a catalyst to promote tourism in the region. Even our family will be leaving for Ratnagiri and Ganpatipule on December 26.”

Hoteliers from Dapoli, also known as mini-Mahabaleshwar of Maharashtra, said, “Bookings are full. This time hotels in Karde, Burundi, too, have registered full bookings. We were getting enquiries soon after Diwali vacations, while our regular customers had already given us token amount in the month of May to reserve their rooms. The confirmed their bookings in October itself. Our regular customer base comes from Pune, Mumbai and also from other states like Karnataka and Gujarat.”

Certain locations like Hedvi in Guhagar taluka that is popular for its Ganesh temple, too, are in demand this time.  Travel companies and tourist car operators have confirmed the mood of the residents. Many of them getting are getting rooms booked for this period. “All our private vehicles are booked from December 25-January 1; most bookings have been done for Konkan, there are some others for Shirdi.”
