'Know Your Area', Mumbai traffic chief Dr BK Upadhyay's new initiative to educate cops

Mumbai traffic police chief Dr BK Upadhyay has come up with a new initiative,'Know Your Area', as per which all the 25 traffic divisions in the city have been instructed to prepare a list of all the no-parking and no-entry areas, one-way roads, etc.

The initiative came after Upadhyay visited many of the divisions and realised that many of the officers and policemen did not have even the basic information of areas under their jurisdiction.. The exercise will begin from Thursday.

Speaking to dna, Upadhyay said: "It is necessary that all the officers and policemen know every detail of the area under their jurisdiction. Since, every few years policemen are transferred from one department to another, those newly posted in an area are generally not aware where the no-parking, no-entry or one-way areas are."

"I have asked senior police inspectors of all the 25 divisions in the city to go through the records of the last 10 years and prepare a chart. This chart will have to be displayed on the station notice board so that everyone cop can look it up. After 10 days, I will start visiting the city divisions to check whether these charts have been prepared," Upadhyay added.

Asked what the purpose of the initiative was, he said the traffic department being an important wing of the Mumbai Police, every officer attached to it should have the basic knowledge about his area of duty. "If they do not know this, how can they manage traffic?" Upadhyay asked.
