The protesting farmers who reached Mumbai on Sunday may have kept the government on its toes, but they decided to take care to ensure no inconvenience to students taking the HSC and SSC exams.

Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha, which is leading the march, said on Sunday evening that the agitators would walk in the night to Azad Maidan. Over 35,000 will be heading for the Vidhan Sabha on Monday to gherao the state's seat of power.

"We do not want to create problems for students and the office goers. We don't mind suffering more but we don't want our students to suffer more," said Ashok Dhavale, national secretary of ABKS.

While the walk at midnight ended the fear of serpentine traffic snarls during morning rush hour, officers from the Mumbai police said they still have a huge challenge to deal with. "The evening hours are likely to see traffic snarls for railways and roads when the farmers would leave the city for their hometowns," said a police officer.

The cops have also tightened the security around Vidhan Bhavan and may try to contain the crowd at the Azad Maidan only, said sources.

"Marching on South Mumbai roads is not allowed. We can not allow them to march and hence large numbers of police personnel would be deployed in the area to restrict them in Azad Maidan. We have also barricaded the area," said a senior police officer.

To control the crowd and ensure that no untoward incident takes place and restrict them in Azad Maidan, over 15,000 cops would be on road across the city. Personnel from State Reserve Police Force, Quick Response Team, Anti Terrorism Squad, Riot control force, Sniffer dog squad along with local policemen would also be deployed in Colaba, Marine Drive and Malabar Hill area.
