Kirit Somaiya, BJP MP from north east constituency, was booked on Monday for assaulting a police officer.

Last Thursday, Somaiya allegedly pushed inspector Sampat Munde and stopped him from carrying out his duties at Navghar police station. The incident happened when Munde allegedly summoned a BJP party worker regarding a petty criminal case filed against him.

Inspector Munde confirmed the FIR registered against Somaiya and said, "Last Thursday we had brought BJP worker Parikshit Bhumi to the police station in connection with a case dated April 16, 2014. A while later, Somaiya came to the police station with a few of his men and started shouting. He said how dare we get Bhumi to the police station without asking him".

"Somaiya even tried to push me when I stopped him from taking Bhumi away from the police station. Inspite of me trying to explain the case to him, he left the police station with Bhumi."

The Navghar police immediately made an official diary entry about the incident and later, on Monday evening, registered an FIR.

According to the Navghar police, on April 16, there had been clashes between the NCP and BJP during a television debate between the party candidates. On the basis of CCTV footage of the incident, the police had taken Bhumi to the police station to book him last Thursday.
