Bringing in Diwali cheer, the Bai Jerabai Wadia Children’s Hospital authority organised a mud fort-making event for children in the hospital. More than 200 children participated in this event on Tuesday held within the hospital premises. Making a fort from mud is an age-old tradition followed by many families on the occasion of Diwali.

As part of the Diwali celebration, children in the age group of five to 14 years participated. According to the hospital authority, the participants built a mud fort and placed diyas on it, in the hope of a brighter future for each one of them. The authority said that playing with mud is connecting with the nature, and this is missing among the current generation. Through this activity, the hospital wanted to bridge the gap between tradition and peaceful celebration.

Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO, Wadia hospitals, said, “Maharashtra has more than 350 forts and they are a glorious heritage of the Maratha Empire. Through this activity we are spreading the message of a pollution-free celebration among children, and also encouraging them to follow traditional practices of making forts with mud. Children also had a fun time making the forts and playing with mud.”

Through this initiative, the hospital wanted to develop a spirit of teamwork among the children.

Dr Minnie, added, “This activity of building a mud fort by hand was a way to engage children in meaningful pursuits. It helped develop a sense of team spirit among the little ones. Children learn to encourage others, find solutions for problems. Children learn the structures of various forts as also the stories associated with them.”
