The south-bound side of Kherwadi flyover could be thrown open for use by the end of May.

UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed this. "We plan to finish construction of the bridge by May end... Work is progressing well," said Madan.

Barricading and construction work had begun on November 1, 2011 and in just over four months, launching of girders has begun and ramps are half done. Ever since construction of the flyover began, officials have been pushing hard to complete work before the 18-month deadline.

This 585-metre-long flyover is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs21.96 crore. When work began, motorists had a tough time due to traffic jams, but gradually the traffic police improved traffic management.

At the moment, the authorities have not decided whether to begin construction of the north-bound bridge during or after the monsoon.
"It depends on the permission from the Mumbai Traffic Police as well as from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. If they allow, we can take up the work even during rainy season," said Madan.

However, once again the challenge will be to manage the ever-increasing Mumbai traffic because the north-bound lanes of Western Express Highway and the service road will have to be redesigned for efficient traffic movement.

Meanwhile, there is a possibility that the authorities will open the completed Kherwadi flyover to be used for either direction.
