Commissioner of police Rakesh Maria has asked all branches and police stations to prepare a list of officers who are into womanizing, corruption and non performance of duties. These officers will be transferred from important departments to those departments where there is no interaction with the public. The move was made following rampant cases of stains on the khaki uniform.

About his decision, Maria informed: "We are making a blacklist of policemen involved in womanizing, alcoholism, drug abuse, corruption and non performance. The list will be available with me by the end of May. These officers will be shunted in the general transfers and posted in those departments where there will be zero public interaction."

The biggest challenge before the departments, says Maria, will be identifying these rogue policemen. "There are many people in the force with such tendencies; we have to identify and isolate them. This will also help us in keeping watch on the activities of these officers," he said.

All joint, additional, deputy and assistant commissioners have been asked to prepare their own lists apart from senior police inspectors of all police stations and branches. Mumbai police has 50,618 men working in the force.

Asked whether these rogue cops will never get a good posting in future, Maria said, "We will give counselling to these policemen and if there is any change in their attitude, then they will be considered."

A month ago, Maria had conducted a meeting with the traffic department following a slew of complaints from citizens. "I had clearly instructed the traffic branch that only performance driven people be associated with them. A month's ultimatum was given to the traffic branch to weed out those policemen who are not fit to work with them," he said.

Citing an example of what constitutes 'effective traffic duty', the police chief said: "If it takes 15 minutes to cross a particular road, then it is expected of the traffic cop on duty to bring down the commute to at least 12-13 minutes. Only making out cases does not mean effective duty. A couple of days ago, the ultimatum had ended, and at least 35 men from the traffic branch were shunted to local arms as they were deemed unfit to work with the traffic department."

Communication skills training for station house officers at all city police stations
Mumbai police is getting its police station house officers to undergo training on effective communication skills. Each police station has around 8 station house officers. "The training is being provided by former cops and professionals on how to deal and behave with the complainants, especially senior citizens and women. It took us 15 days to prepare the training module. The first batch of duty officers have already been trained. I have also instructed all police stations that if a complainant approaches them, then a Zero FIR needs to be registered and the officers should not indulge in jurisdiction issues," said police commissioner Rakesh Maria. Maria said that by May end, station house officers from all police stations across city will be trained.
