Khaghar's Apeksha Shrirao shines in swimming

Apeksha Shrirao, a class VIII student of Apeejay School, Kharghar, won three gold medals at the National Swimming Competition held at Balewadi Stadium in Pune between December 11 and 14. The competition was organised by the School Games Federation of India (SGFA).

Fourteen-year-old Shrirao won three medals in 100 metre breast stroke with the timing 1:24:54 seconds; 200 metre breast stroke with the timing 2:57:68 seconds and 4x100 metre medley relay respectively.

“Shrirao had participated in total four categories and won gold medals in three categories and managed fourth position in 50 metres,” said Kishore Patil, coach of Shrirao. Patil added that she was very close to the earlier record in 200 metre breast stroke 2:57:41 made in 2010 in the under-14 category in which she participated in the tournament.

Around 500 children had participated in the national event. “The event was important as it has been recognised by the government,” said Patil.

Shrirao practices around three hours everyday at the Ramseth Thakur Sports Academy in Ulwe under the guidance of her coach Patil. Shrirao had also won three silver medals in CBSE national swimming competition held at Sonepat, Haryana, from November 6 to November 11 this year.

In 2012, Shrirao won two gold medals in 50 metre and 100 metre breast stroke and one gold medal in 4x100 metre medley relay in national swimming competition held at Pune.

She had also achieved success in CBSE national swimming competition last year where she won two gold medals in 100 metre and 50 metre breast stroke. The event was held at Balewadi Stadium Pune in November 2012.

“Apeksha has been giving consistent performances and her aim is to participate and win in Senior Nationals and Asian Open Games,” said her father Mahesh Shrirao.
