KEM hospital opens gym for nurses in Aruna Shanbaug's memory

It was the nurses' love and care that had kept the 67-year-old ticking even though her health was not in the best of states. Around 1,152 nursing staffers at KEM hospital, each one of them, as per rotation, got a chance to serve Shanbaug.

To commemorate the first death anniversary of its beloved nurse Aruna Shanbaug, Parel's KEM hospital has opened a gymnasium exclusively for nurses.

Shanbaug lived in the hospital's ward number four in a vegetative state for 42 years after being sexually assaulted and strangled by ward boy Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki. When her family refused to take care of her due to financial constraints, the hospital's nurses stepped in and took care of her. They stood by her like a rock in 1980 when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation made an attempt to move her out of the hospital.

Hospital dean and director of many civic hospitals Dr Avinash Supe said, "A gym has been inaugurated in the name of the late Aruna Shanbaug on her first death anniversary. It will give the nurses a place to meditate and conduct yoga sessions to help them keep fit."

Welcoming the decision, Trupti Loke, a nurse from KEM hospital, called it a wonderful tribute to Shanbaug. "Aruna was known for her excellent nursing care. It has been a year but we still miss her as she was part of our routine. The gym in her memory will keep her alive in our thoughts everyday. It's only for the nurses. Fitness is very important for us, we need to stay on our toes during the long hours of duty."
