A three-and-a-half year old child's death in KEM hospital has led to 800 resident doctors going on indefinite strike from Friday.

According to the hospital sources, the boy -- Abu Sufian, a Govandi resident, was brought to the Parel hospital at around 11pm on Thursday in a critical condition. "The child had no recordable pulse and blood pressure and required pediatric intensive care unit admission. The family was counselled about the same and informed that PICU beds were not available," said Dr Sagar Mundada, president of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).

While the consent of the family was taken, he was shifted to general ward and timely update on the child was given to the family, said MARD. Sufian's condition further worsened and he succumbed to the disease at 4.45am.

"CPR and resuscitation was given. He died of dengue syndrome shock. The father and relatives got upset and angry and started assaulting the doctors posted in the pediatric ward -- Dr Kushal Sharnagat, Dr Puneet Garg, and Dr Suhas Chowdhary -- despite all necessary medications having been given to the patient," said Dr Mundada.

The doctors were beaten up with iron tables, wooden sticks and chairs by three relatives. Dr Garg suffered blunt head injuries and injuries all over his body. "He is been kept under observation for 24 hours. The other two doctors have sustained blunt injuries on their bodies and are fine," said Dr Mundada.

According to hospital sources, female security guards from Eagle firm stationed at the ward allegedly ran away after commotion in the ward scaled up.

KEM Hospital's dean Dr Avinash Supe later went and registered a first information report against the parents and assailants.

While the resident doctors are fighting for their safety, the case as also brought into focus the need to have strong medical facilities across the city for fighting dengue infection.

According to the sources at police station, Sufian was first taken to a private hospital before being taken to KEM hospital.

This is the fourth dengue death in the city. So far more than 469 people have tested positive for dengue this year. Around 356 of these cases are in the age group of 13-45, said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

800 resident doctors at KEM Hospital will be on indefinite strike till the demands of increased security and additional CCTV cameras for protection are met.

"Since the monsoon ailments are on rise, the Ganesh festival is going on, we have decided that only KEM hospital will go on indefinite strike. Others will protest with black ribbons and report to work. We will review the situation on Monday and decide accordingly," said Dr Mundada.

He claimed that the KEM hospital currently has 10 CCTV cameras against the demand of 145 cameras for the entire premises.

There is also a long-pending demand of purchasing around 21 walkie-talkies. "The doctors were assaulted by the family members of the patient following which we received complaint and registered a case against the accused. We have arrested Zunaid Qhureshi and Nizamuddin Qhureshi in connection with the case", said an officer from Bhoiwada police station.
