When two weeks back, Panvel resident Vikas Kurhade was taken to KEM hospital, his family had no hope that he would survive the multiple abrasions on his chest and neck sustained in a lift accident. However, in a two-hour-long emergency surgery, doctors managed to repair most of the damage successfully.

Kurhade was visiting his brother's factory in Panvel when he met with an accident. He was in the lift when the cable snapped and the containers kept in the elevator injured his neck.

"He was brought to us with severe injuries in the neck and chest, besides a lot of bruising. He was breathless, had chest pain and complaint of change in voice. Luckily, he didn't have any cervical fracture," said Dr Nilam Sathe, ENT surgeon.

She added that there was a big tear in the windpipe because of which the air was getting trapped in the chest, lung and heart region.

"The air had got accumulated in the neck too, which is what increased the chance of death. We had to take him up for an emergency surgery. Apart from the windpipe, the voice box too was completely damaged. The nerve, which supplies to the voice box, was also damaged, paralysing his left vocal chord," said Dr Hetal Marfatia, ENT surgeon.

Doctors sutured his wind pipe, which they said was the most difficult procedure. "Now, he has been inserted with a tracheostomy tube through a surgical procedure performed on him to create an opening through the neck into the windpipe. He is out of danger, but he may never have a normal voice again and will also face difficulty in speaking," said Sathe.

She added that his wounds would take three to four weeks to heal and he would have to undergo speech therapy and would also be taught how to eat. "We will give him swallowing exercises. It will help him regain a bit of his voice. We are waiting for his wound to heal to understand the extent of the damage to his voice," said Sathe.
