Going beyond the call of duty, is what a neuro-surgeon from KEM Hospital preaches. Dr Aadil Chagla, who also runs a trust, will be holding a concert on August 8 to raise funds for trauma centres along a national highway and raise awareness on road safety.

"The funds raised by the concert will used to give momentum to our trust and the agenda is to have multiple small, but well-equipped trauma centres on national highways in western India, starting with NH-17 – which links Mumbai and Goa," said Dr Chagla.

According to traffic officials, the 450km Panvel-Mahad-Panji Road, better known as the Mumbai-Goa Highway or NH-17, is most prone to accidents, as compared to other state highways. The NH-17 has seven of the 100 black spots identified by the state highway police three years ago.

"In road accidents, getting treatment within the golden hour is very important. We therefore decided to come up with more trauma centres along NH-17 so that accident victims get medical treatment at the earliest and we can reduce mortality rates," said Dr Chagla.

The concert will be held in Sophia Bhabha Auditorium, Cumballa Hill. Prominent celebrities like Boman Irani, Cyrus Broacha, Kunal Vijaykar and Shahriyar Atai will be present. "Natasha Agarwal – a soprano who recently performed in 'Phantom of the Opera', will perform. Bosco Rodrigues will present his choir. There will be another opera singer's performance too," said Dr Chagla.

Dr Chagla started the Shaukat C Chagla Memorial Trust in memory of his father, who was an eminent lawyer and whom he lost at the age of 15. "The trust aims to set up a state of the art Neuro Center, comprising operation theatres, hi-tech ICUs, wards and emergency services. Presently, the trust will be conducting seminars and CME as well as medical camps in rural Maharashtra, especially the Konkan region, for the under-privileged suffering from neurological disorders and other common diseases," said Dr Chagla.
