The Ladies' Wing of the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry held their annual general meeting at IMC, Churchgate on Tuesday. Stalwarts like Deepika Singh Rajawat, Manju Srivastava, Zarin Daruwala, Rajagopala Chidambaram, Ashok Kurien, and Agnelorajesh Athaide were felicitated for their contribution to their respective fields at the event.

Deepika Singh Rajawat received the Woman of The Year Award for fighting the Kathua rape case fearlessly, despite receiving death threats.

"Media played a positive role and highlighted the case. Women security in this country is a crumbling illusion. Despite being a part of the judiciary, I'd say I have seen things going astray. The system needs to be changed. It is the responsibility of the stakeholders heading the states and the country. As an activist I feel we need to start from scratch," said Rajawat.

"The charge sheet mentions that certain aspects of the Kathua case are still being probed. We are thankful to the SC for the judgment passed in this regard. Seeing the hostility in the atmosphere we were apprehensive of the success of the trial. So we filed a petition in the SC seeking transfer of the case to some other part of the country," she said.

Rajawat runs an NGO called Voice for Rights, which looks into cases of human rights violation against women and children. She focuses on cases of trafficking and child labour.

Rajagopala Chidambaram, former principal scientific advisor to the government, also known for his integral role in India's nuclear weapons programme, was the chief guest of the event.

Nayantara Jain, president, Ladies' Wing, IMC, said "The theme this year is 'Winds of Change'. We focused on women from rural sectors. They are very empowered in their own way and deserve recognition. We synergised our members with women from rural areas to empower them in every way possible."

The Guest of Honor of the afternoon was Ashok Kurien, who is the Managing Director of Ambience Publicising Advertising Public Limited, which is one of India's largest advertising agencies. Agnelorajesh Athaide, the promoter, Chairman and Managing Director of St. Agnelo's professional education, was the special guest of the ceremony.
