The Agripada police arrested the medical superintendent of Kasturba hospital for allegedly duping two students of Rs23 lakh by promising medical seats to both of them. The police have launched a manhunt for a wanted accused who acted as a middleman between the medical superintendent and the victims.

According to the Agripada police, the complainant in the case, Rajendra Mathewad, hails from Latur district in rural Maharashtra. Mathewad along with another victim had paid a collective amount of Rs23 lakh to the accused, Siwananda Gawand, the medical superintendent.

"The money was given to Gawand in June last year by the victim when they came in touch with him through the wanted accused in the case. Gawand promised them seats in a medical college and took the money from them," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone 3) S Jaykumar. He added: "After many months passed by and there was no signs of admission, the victims realised that they were duped and they approached the police with their complainant."

An FIR under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 34 (common intention) was registered against Gawand and the middleman who introduced the two victims to Gawand.
