When the going gets tough, get the tough to lie low. That’s what an official of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) in Mumbai allegedly told Prakash Naval, owner of the dilapidated structure for whose renovation clearances 35 policemen were caught taking bribes on a spycam.

Kasim Khan, the whistleblower in the Nehru Nagar bribery case, has now alleged that an ACB official who met Naval on Saturday to tell him to appear before the agency on Monday to record his statement told him plainly that “it would be better if he doesn’t show up”.

The sting operation had forced a stung Mumbai police to immediately suspend the 35 personnel as well as their station in-charge and to hand over the case to the ACB.

“A constable from the ACB and a constable from the Nehru Nagar police station came to meet Naval to hand over a letter from the ACB, asking him to record his statement before it. I was there when the two constables arrived, but left soon after. They met Naval and gave him the letter.

Though I had left by the time they met Naval, I have learnt that before leaving, they told him that it would be better if he doesn’t turn up for recording his statement,” claims Khan.

Raj Khilnani, director general of police, ACB, assures that he will follow up on this allegation. “We will look into this if the ACB personnel had told Naval not to show up to record his statement. The probe has been handed over to a senior officer and we will probing the case from all angles.”

Khan wants the probe agency to take call details of his mobile phone and make them part of the evidence against the policemen. “The police have claimed that I had lured the personnel into taking the bribe. My phone records will show that I haven’t made any call to any policeman. On the contrary, I had received calls from the policemen, who persistently asked for my location so that they could meet me and collect the money.”
