Ganesha sits amid a set up of the solar system, and there are reams of information on the planet Earth's ecological concerns. With this year's theme, Manvikas Mitra Mandal in Shastri Nagar, Kanjurmarg east is trying to tell people to wake up before it's too late.

Anand Kubal, trustee of Manvikas Mitra Mandal said, "The population will increase to 9 billion people by 2050 as per a study. The rate at which we are consuming and polluting the environment, they say in another 100-150 years, we may have to move to another planet. Hence we are trying to tell people that they wake up and start taking care of our environment."

The Mandal has been around for 40 years and began observing an eco-friendly Ganeshotsav five years ago. "We decided to move to eco-friendly Ganpati because it does not harm the environment. Even the immersion is done in an artificial pond," said Kubal.

This year, the mandal has two Ganpati idols. "The small one is of Shadu Mati (clay) while the bigger one is of paper. Though it was considered as eco-friendly until last year the National Green Tribunal said it is not. However, the government is yet to issue any notification on it," said Kubal.

Besides immersing the idols in the artificial lake, it also reuses decorations. This year's decorations may also be given to students working on a science project, the mandal said.
