NM Joshi Marg police Wednesday arrested the third accused who allegedly gang-raped a 22-year-old woman construction labourer from Lower Parel on September 20. The police had arrested two accused in the case on Tuesday evening. They are now looking out for the fourth.
According to NM Joshi Marg police, the third accused in the case been identified as Mohammed Rakhiul Islam, 20. Islam was attempting to the flee but the police arrested him in the nick of time. "After Islam got information that his two accomplices were already arrested by Byculla police, he was trying to flee. But we managed to arrest him," said Ajay Patankar, senior police inspector.
"The fourth accused will also be arrested soon. Meanwhile, we have produced the three arrested accused in the court and have got their custody."
On Tuesday, the husband of the survivor approached the Byculla police station and registered a complaint of gang rape. The Byculla police immediately registered a Zero FIR and arrested Mohammed Isharuddin, 27 and Kamal Hassan, 23. The case and the arrested accused were then transferred to NM Joshi Marg police station.
According to the survivor's statement to the police, on September 20, all the four accused, who were known to her, took her to the Samtanagar area in Kandivli promising her a job at a construction site. When they reached Kandivli, they took her to an isolated place and raped her.
"Out of fear, she did not speak about the incident to anyone. However, when a few days later she had fever and was admitted in a hospital, she confided to her husband. The husband on Tuesday registered the complaint," said Patankar.
"We have recovered the clothes that the survivor was wearing on the day of the incident and sent them for a test. We are also looking for eyewitnesses who would have spotted the woman with the accused."
