The rape of the 5-year-old child in Kandivli on Wednesday is as brutal as the Delhi gang rape of paramedic Nirbhaya a year-and-half ago, which shook the nation.

According to the police, the survivor, who lived on footpath with her mother and brother at Saibaba Nagar, was abducted around 3am by the accused, who resided in the neighbourhood. Doctors said she was raped in the most barbaric manner. The accused inserted a sweeping broom inside her vagina. When the survivor's mother found her by her side in the morning, bleeding and crying, she rushed the girl to the BMC-run Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli.

When the girl's condition worsened, she was shifted to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central around 11.30am on Wednesday.

A doctor from the forensic medicine department at Nair Hospital said, "A sweeping broom was inserted to about one foot inside the girl's private parts. Her vagina and rectum were severely mutilated and she had lost a lot of blood. One unit of blood was transfused during the surgery."

The survivor was sedated and operated upon by paediatric surgeons.

"When she was wheeled into the operation theatre, she was conscious but in tremendous pain. Her clothes were soaked in blood. The broom was removed from her vagina. The infected parts were cleaned and a colostomy was performed and an incision was made in her abdomen to facilitate the passing of stool and urine," said a doctor.

Doctors said that her intestines were ruptured and it will take over a month to heal. "She is not in a position to digest food and is on intravenous fluids at the moment," added the doctor.

The forensic medicine department has collected particulates and swabs from her body and have sent it to Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.

The Kandivli police have registered a case of rape but has not made any arrest yet. Confirming the brutality of incident, the police said that the accused is still at large. "We have scanned the CCTV footage of the area and identified the accused. The child's mother has informed us that he lives in the same area," said Balsingh Rajput, DCP of Zone II.

The police, while scanning the CCTV footage, have noticed a man taking away the child. "We have formed teams to nab the accused," said Srikanth Mohite, police inspector, Kandivli police station.
