A 24-year-old man who allegedly transported 10 bullocks in a tempo from Solapur to Mumbai with fake Regional Transport Office (RTO) permits, was arrested by Kamothe police on Tuesday night. The police have also seized the tempo along with the animals.

According to the police, Abdul Salam Qureshi, a resident of Govandi was to deliver the animals to some place in Mumbai.

“Around 9.30pm we got to know that a vehicle full of bullocks was coming towards Mumbai along the Sion-Panvel highway; we sent our officials to get hold of it. Within a few minutes they noticed a tempo coming from Pune side and stopped it near the Kamothe signal,” said Shriram Mullemwar, senior police inspector of Kamothe police station.

The driver told the officers that he was transporting the animals from Solapur and also showed the documents of purchasing them. “However, he was unable to give coherent replies when we asked for the RTO permit of transporting the animals. We had some doubts about the permit that he showed after a long time and we took him to the police station. It was later revealed that the permit shown by the accused was fake and then we arrested him,” Mullemwar said.

Though the police are not sure, they suspect Qureshi was to deliver the animals to some slaughter house in Mumbai. “We are investigating the case to find out who sent the bullocks from Solapur and Qureshi’s actual destination in Mumbai,” another police officer said.

The police have booked Qureshi under sections 466, 468, 471, 473, 474 of the Indian Penal Code and section 11 of the Animal Act. He was produced before the judicial court on Wednesday morning and has been remanded to police custody for two days.
