Kamathipura building collapse: Illegal fourth floor led to mishap, says MLA

Illegal fourth floor proved fatal for six victims of Gulmohar Building on Forus Road in Kamathipura of South Mumbai which collapsed on Saturday.

While the area has more than 600 illegal buildings as per the estimates given by local MLA Amin Patel, residents of the area, including women from the opposite Alexandria Building, claimed that that the fourth floor was recently raised on the terrace of the building and heavy beams were stacked inside.

While Mhada officials claimed ignorance about the fourth floor showing their floor plans of the building having only ground plus three structure. However, civic officials from E ward said that they will investigate into the issue of illegal floor. Kishore Desai, assistant commissioner of the ward who was present at the site, said an inquiry will be done.

Meanwhile, Patel said that if proved that the building had illegal floor, we will ensure that guilty will not be spared. "There are lot of circumstantial evidences which cries aloud that there was illegal fourth floor on the building. But authorities need to investigate and establish it. That will never happen because it will open a big can of worms," he said.

He added: "There are at least 600 illegal buildings in the area and authorities have done nothing to control it. We have time and again warned the officials not to be lenient about illegal constructions because at the end it only kills innocent people and not the developers who earn money by risking people's lives."

However, no concrete action has been taken by the civic authorities for the blatant crime resulting in con developers getting scot-free. Recently, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta had directed his officers to take stringent action against the illegal buildings but no action has been initiated till now.
