The NM Joshi Marg police that is probing the Kamala Mills Fire case told the court on Monday that Ramesh Govani, co-owner of Kamala Mills Compound was negligent about structural changes in the two pubs.
The police also said that the accused used the basement of the structure for illegal use. "We are investigating Govani's role in lapses that led to the fire," said a senior police officer.
On Monday night, Govani was arrested after a BMC report said that he was negligent about structural changes that led to patrons at the bars being unable to escape when the fire broke out. The police produced him in Bhoiwada court on Tuesday.
Public Prosecutor Sanjay Wadhavane pleaded before the court to give maximum police custody, stating that the police have to obtain the lease agreement and licenses of the premises,"For any kind of renovation, it was required for the two pubs — 1 Above and Mojo's — to take permission from Govani and hence they need his custody," he told the court.
