Mojo Bistro's co-owner and a prime accused in the Kamala Mills fire surrendered before the NM Joshi Marg police on Tuesday.  Accused Yug Tuli had gone undergone since the blaze on December 29, 2017. The tragedy snuffed out the lives of 14 people.

"I have come to surrender since my bail plea got rejected. I was waiting for the anticipatory bail in Amritsar," Tuli said. His business partner Yug Pathak is already in police custody.

The Nagpur-based businessman was produced in the Bhoiwada court which remanded him in police custody for five days.

According to the police, Tuli was avoiding arrest and was on the run since a first information report (FIR) was registered against Mojo Bistro. He fled to Hyderabad and then Amritsar before filing an anticipatory bail, which was rejected on January 12.

Seeking Tuli's custody, the police told the court that he was one of the prime accused in the case. The police blamed Tuli for illegally serving hookah at Mojo that caused the fire and spread to 1Above. Special Public Prosecutor Prakash Shetty also alleged that Tuli had carried out an illegal extension at Mojo's which blocked the entry and exits.

Defence lawyer Shyam Diwani said Tuli turned himself in after his anticipatory bail was rejected and went to the police station whenever he was called for questioning. "The fire brigade report that said that the fire started from Mojo's is full of flaws and based on social media posts,"

Diwani further stated "Apart from that the FIR registered in the case and remand copy are completely contrary to each other. If the fire started at Tuli's restaurant why no one did not get even injured there? The FIR states that the entry and exits were blocked at 1Above and now the Remand says it's in Mojo which is really contrary. Whenever Tuli was called by the police for recording statements he was there. There is nothing to recover and question as everything has been done earlier and hence minimum police custody should be given."
