An argument over Re1 cost a 54-year-old Kalyan resident his life. Around 11pm on Friday, Manohar Gamane, a resident of Dattatrey building, Rambaug lane, Kalyan west, had gone to buy eggs from nearby Prabhu Brothers shop.

"He bought two eggs for Rs 11 but had only Rs 10 to pay," said API Bhushan Dayma, Mahatma Phule police station, Kalyan. "So he asked the shopkeeper if it was okay to pay Re 1 less. At this, shop owner Ramkrushna Prabhu (45) started abusing him," Dayma said.

Gamane went home and told his son Prashant, 31, about the incident. Angry that his father was insulted over a small issue, Prashant, accompanied by his father, went to confront Prabhu at the store.

"It enraged Prabhu when Prashant asked why he made a big deal over such a small amount. He started hurling abuses at Gamane, pulled his collar and started punching him on his chest and neck. Gamane succumbed to his injuries," the API added.

The police arrested Prabhu on Saturday and booked him under sections 302 (murder) 323 (voluntarily cause hurt) and 501(defame). He has been remanded in police custody till February 7.
