With municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta stressing aggressive action against illegal structures in the city, almost all wards have started taking action. However, the K-east ward has chosen to walk the extra mile and is ensuring that illegal structures don't crop up again. Assistant Commissioner of K-east ward Devendra Jain has instructed his staff from the maintenance department and the building and factory department to patrol the area continuously to keep a check on illegal constructions.

One of the longest stretches which have been cleared of all the illegal structures, extensions, hawkers, and stalls is Nagardas Road in Andheri East. Officials from K-east ward feared that once the illegal structures are removed, they tend to come back.

To address this issue, Devendra Jain said that after years of experience it has been observed that structures which come up again are difficult to evict. Few of them simply approach the court to seek a stay. This gives them ample time to circumvent the law. "So it is easier to keep watch on them and ensure that the structures don't come up again. The staff deputed in the ward is on continuous patrol. This deters them from raising the structures again. It's working very well as of now", said Jain.

"Then the ward office will have to again approach police authorities to give protection, arrange machinery, staff and labour. All this consumes both time and money. Assistant Commissioner had decided to beautify the road and hence it is necessary to keep vigil", said a civic official from the maintenance department of K-east ward.

Residents of the area are happy to know the plan. "Earlier there was a mess. Now, we have a clear road for two-way flow of vehicles," said a resident.
