If things fall in place, South Mumbai may soon have its first cable car ropeway. A corporator representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) proposed the idea of having a ropeway installed from Malabar Hill to Nariman Point via the Girgaon Chowpatty area. The proposal will be taken up for discussion during the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) general body meeting later in May.

Jyotsna Mehta, the BJP corporator from Malabar Hill working for the civic body's D ward, said that this can be a good tourist attraction, as well as it will give people a bird's eye view of the southern part of the city.

Only in the recent past, the Hydraulic Engineering Department of the BMC inaugurated a gallery next to the Kamla Nehru Park at Malabar Hill. The gallery is receiving active response from visitors. "The ropeway will make South Mumbai a bigger attraction," said Mehta.

She said that similar ideas have been executed in other cities and have turned out to be successful. "We have a number of examples where cable cars were made functional and people are using it. This will also add to the beauty of the city," said Mehta. She further added that Malabar Hill is already a sought after area and such projects will therefore encourage more footfall.

"If Rishikesh, Kashmir, and even Saptarshi - a small tourist spot in Gujarat - can have ropeways, why can't Mumbai?"Mehta said.

However, the proposal requires fool-proof planning since it will be going across the sea. Safety measure need to be put in place. In addition, the area leading to the ropewayshould have sufficient space. "We need to check whether there is sufficient space at both ends to install the ropeway. We will need space for parking, as well as other amenities," a senior civic official said on the condition of anonymity.

An official from the Municipal Secretary Department said that even if the proposal gets an approval from the corporation, it will require permission from the state government.
