Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud of the Bombay high court has been elevated as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad high court, said registrar general of high court CV Bhadang.

Justice Chandrachud’s warrant elevating him as CJ arrived on Wednesday afternoon after his name was cleared by the Supreme Court collegium.

The 54-year-old, who is the second senior-most judge in the Bombay high court, will take charge as CJ on Thursday morning. “He will be sworn in as CJ, Allahabad HC, on Thursday and (he) will immediately take charge,” said Bhadang.

Excited about his elevation, one of his staff members said it was a much-deserved one. “He is one of the best judges. He is also very kind-hearted,” added the staffer. Justice Chandrachud is said to be a judge with sharp legal acumen and one who has always encouraged junior lawyers to argue. He is said to have even patiently heard those who didn’t wish to engage lawyers and fought their own cases.

Bollywood actor Boman Irani, who had come to the HC once for doing his ‘homework’ before shooting for a movie, in which he played a judge, had said that he liked the courtroom of justice Chandrachud the most. “Of all the courts, I like the court of justice (DY) Chandrachud the most.

The courtroom has an air of elegance. He compassionately heard an old man arguing his case,” Irani had said.

After receiving his Masters in Law degree from Harvard University, justice Chandrachud started practising in high courts in India and appeared in several cases involving public interest litigations, rights of bonded women workers, HIV+ workers and religious and linguistic minorities.

He was appointed as additional solicitor general of India in 1998 and was elevated to additional judge of the Bombay high court in March 2000. During his tenure as a high court judge, justice Chandrachud heard company petitions and public interest litigations, including ones on the sorry state of affairs in shelter homes and on malnutrition.
