In an indication that the digital divide is yet to be bridged, the state government has admitted that just over 50% of primary and higher secondary schools in Maharashtra have computers.
In a written reply to a question by Sunil Shinde (Shiv Sena-Worli) in the state legislative assembly on Monday, education minister Vinod Tawde said 50.63% of primary and higher secondary schools in the state had computers.
This was stated in a report by the National University for Education Planning and Administration.
Tawde added that computer labs were being given in stages to aided secondary and higher secondary schools. The higher secondary schools run by local self-government bodies were given computers from the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan based on the availability of grants.
