Two days after the body of a nine-year-old girl was found in a Juhu drain, she was cremated at a Juhu crematorium, where public turned up in huge numbers. Over 3,500 people had gathered near the crematorium to support the family who lost the young girl at the hands of an ex-convict paedophile, Devendra Vadivel aka Gundappa (35) on Thursday evening.

The anguished locals of Nehru Nagar area and neighbouring slums were evidently angry over the incapability of police to avert such an incident despite conducting regular night patrolling in the area. One of the locals, who did not wished to be named, said, "Police behaved so rashly and didn't even let us sit out of the house after 10.30pm. Medical stores and milk centres are compelled to shut after dark, but stalls serving of Chinese food and liquor shops continue to operate in the night. Why show apathy towards the criminally active am target the locals unnecessarily? "

While the mother of the nine-year-old had refused to claim her daughter's body from the morgue of the civic-run Cooper Hospital, she was asked by the police and doctors to claim the body. The girl's mother said, "My daughter was raped and killed for nothing. Moreover, the accused, Gundappa, had dumped her body in a gutter and left her to rot. She faced a dangerous death and I wished to not claim her body till she was brought to justice."

After the incident, the anguished locals of Nehru Nagar continued to protest against the horrible incident, by blocking roads and hurling anti-police slogans outside police station. The mob of over 300 people took to the streets and protested outside Juhu Police station on Monday evening as well, demanding maximum punishment to Gundappa and suspension of the police detection team who failed to protect the locals of Nehru Nagar.

A senior police inspector of Juhu police station said, "The accused has been remanded in police custody till April 15 and we are doing a thorough investigation in the matter. The protests staged by the locals prove to be a hurdle in our investigation as half our efforts are put in to manage the angry crowd."
