Juhi Chawla and fellow activist Prakash Munshi have asked the state government to ensure that the rules for mobile phone towers curb the radiation hazard.

At a meeting on Monday with chief secretary Jayant Banthia, urban development secretary Manukumar Shrivastava and environment secretary RA Rajeev, the two expressed their concerns and informed the officials about how the radiation issue was  being dealt with by a representative group of citizens from seven countries in the European Union.

The chief secretary informed Chawla and Munshi that the state had prepared a draft policy on mobile phone towers that would be discussed at a conference later this month. All stakeholders, including the Tata Memorial Hospital, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, representatives of mobile phone companies and citizens groups, will attend the conference and their criticisms and suggestions would be incorporated in the policy, Banthia said.

The chief secretary said he would provide them with a copy of the draft policy and that he looked forward to their response.

Chawla and Munshi also underlined the need for separate norms for different areas, like cities and  villages, which had different architecture and environment. But the officials said that it would be difficult to make separate policies for separate municipalities and panchayats.
