A television journalist was allegedly attacked on Saturday night by a group of unidentified people, while he was returning to his south Mumbai residence with a friend.

The journalist, Herman Gomes, who works as a reporter for a private news channel, said there were six people in all who assaulted him. He said the incident took place around 1.30 am on Sunday morning, when he and a friend were heading to his house when they saw a group of men already waiting outside. A heated argument ensued, following which the accused hit Gomes and fled from the spot. "I was attacked by an unknown group of people right outside my house. It was clearly pre-planned and they assaulted me with knuckle dusters. I always mind my own business but last night was different, as they came out to kill me. I have been covering many stories apart from crime in Mumbai and I don't know which of my stories affected people so much, especially people I don't even know," Gomes wrote on his social media page.

Following the incident, he rushed to the Gamdevi police to seek immediate action, but the on duty station officers refused to lodge a complaint, instead asking him for evidence to prove the assault. They later registered a case and said they are searching for the accused.

"The victim saw about six people waiting outside his residence, and they abused and beat him. A case has been registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. The motive behind the attack is yet unknown, but the investigation is underway," said deputy commissioner of police, Zone-II, Dnyaneshwar Chavan.
