The 27-year-old woman, who hanged herself at Manora MLA hostel at Nariman Point, had been depressed for a long time.

Rupali Andhare, niece of personal assistant of Solapur MLA Babandada Shinde, committed suicide on Saturday.

Shinde, an Nationalist Congress Party MLA from Madha constituency in Solapur, said: “The woman was a post graduate in English and had also completed B.Ed. She was searching for a job for the past few years and was depressed.”

She was being given psychiatric treatment in Nargis Dutt Cancer Hospital in Barshi for the past few months, he added.

“She might have taken the step due to depression. Her brother had gone out for shopping for Ganesh festival when she hanged herself,” Shinde said.

On Tuesday, home minister RR Patil said that Rupali locked herself in the hostel room. Some PWD workers took her to the hospital.

Patil added that police are investigating into the matter.

The police said Rupali was unmarried and had come to Mumbai a few days ago and was staying in the hostel with her brother.

The siblings’ parents died a few years ago, said the police.

“On September 14, Rupali came to stay in the hostel. From her relatives’ statement, we came to know that she was depressed because she was unable to find a job and she was also worried about her marriage,” said JK Kharat, senior police inspector of Cuffe Parade police station.
